A Superb Honor Band!
Tri-State Honor Band students must be recommended by their band director and should be an outstanding performer. To apply, students must submit a completed application. Membership is competitive, and students in grades 7-12 are eligible.
The deadline for the receipt of your application is MARCH 24, 2023. All persons will be notified of acceptance by MARCH 27, 2023. Students not selected will be placed on a waiting list in the event of cancellations.
Students selected for membership will arrive on Friday morning, March 31st for the first rehearsal. Students, band directors and chaperones may use pre-arranged housing in the Oakland City area. A list of nearby hotels with very economical conference rates is included in this brochure. Local residents may opt to return home.
The clinic fee for each selected honor band student will be $35, which includes the band festival fee, food, and clinician fees.
Student Instrumental Clinics
Area Music Faculty will present clinics for students during the festival on all band instruments. Topics range from All-State etudes to technical and musical performance.
Audition Requirements
If selected, students will be expected to perform a portion of the concert music. Students will be placed in their respective sections based on this performance.
Concert Tickets
We will issue FREE tickets for the concerts on Saturday evening. Tickets will be distributed to participating students. Masks are encouraged.

The Conductors
Dr. Doug Overmier
DOUG OVERMIER is a Yamaha Artist, the Director of Bands at Oakland City University, and the President of ArrO Music Publishing in Atlanta, GA. Previously, he held positions as Director of Bands at the College of Central Florida, Director of Bands and Percussive Studies at the University of West Georgia, and as the Assistant Department Chair and Director of Bands at North Carolina State University. Dr. Overmier also taught public schools in Florida, North Carolina, and Ohio where his ensembles earned superior ratings.
Overmier’s ensembles have received top performance honors at The Kennedy Center, three International Society of Music Educators biennial conferences, the National Association for Music Education, twelve state music conferences, regional television commercials, pro sporting events, CBS Television movies, National Public Radio, and in tours of Europe, Mexico, the Bahamas, and Antigua. As a performer, he has appeared with renowned artists including Winton Marcellus, Alan Jackson, Mark Ford, David Friedman, Mary Wilson, Steve Houghton, Dizzy Gillespie, and David Samuels. His numerous performance credits include The North Carolina Symphony, Triangle Opera Company Orchestra, and the West Virginia Symphony.
He is a published composer and arranger of over 300 band arrangements and more than 100 jazz and percussion works. Many of these works can be heard on the Ozone Percussion CD “La Bamba” (Klavier Records) and “I Said Jazz” (Emerald Records). In addition, his music is featured in the CBS Television movie “Never Give Up: The Jimmy V Story.” Overmier has authored numerous articles in the Chronicle of Higher Education, and the Instrumentalist magazines. His most recent book, “Approaches to Percussion Performance” has been adopted by multiple colleges and universities.
